We begin

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,

and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;

for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.”  (Matt 11:28,29 NRSV)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Confession and Assurance of Grace

Jesus shows us what to do when we are weary and carrying heavy burdens. Let’s do that now. Let’s come to Jesus in prayer and confess our sins in the presence of God and each other. Together we will learn from him and find rest for our souls.

Dear Jesus, thank you that we can come to you,
learn from you and find rest for our souls.
We confess to you, that we are weary and carry heavy burdens
because we have failed to follow your will
and have chased after our own desires and expectations.
We are sorry. Have mercy on us and forgive us all our sins.
Teach us your gentle ways and bring us to eternal life. Amen.

Jesus is gentle and humble in heart and welcomes us to himself, he has taken our sin and burdens with him to the cross and in turn gives us his love and grace so that we may find our peace and rest in him. Praise God our Father for sending Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour and Friend.

Amen

Hymn: What a friend we have in Jesus

Public domain. (LHS  426)
Joseph Scriven (1820-1886)

Lyrics, music, and vocals at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6FrcfqsSbk

1
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.

2
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

3
Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge!
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

Verse 1
What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy my righteousness and freedom
My steadfast love my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to his
Oh how strange and divine I can sing all is mine
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Verse 2
The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side the Saviour he will stay
I labour on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need his power is displayed

To this I hold my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley he will lead
Oh the night has been won and I shall overcome
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Verse 3
No fate I dread I know I am forgiven
The future sure the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And he was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released I can sing I am free
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Verse 4
With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For he has said that he will bring me home
And day by day I know he will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to him
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to him
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Ending
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me
Yet not I but through Christ in me

Yet not I but through Christ in me

Prayer for blessing through God’s word

Almighty and merciful God,
your Son revealed the wonder of your saving love
and conquered sin and death.
through your word today,

and give us victory through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In his name we pray. Amen.

Hymn: Come, Gracious Spirit, Heavenly Dove

Public Domain (LHS 125)
Simon Browne (1680-1732) and others

Lyrics, music and vocals at https://youtu.be/bPnNGMD-dSo

Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With light and comfort from above:
Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide,
O’er every thought and step preside.

The light of Truth to us display,
And make us know and choose Thy way;
Plant holy fear in every heart,
That we from God may ne’er depart.

Lead us to Christ, the living Way,
Nor let us from His pastures stray;
Lead us to holiness, the road
That we must take to dwell with God.

Lead us to Heaven that we may share
Fulness of joy for ever there;
Lead us to God, our final rest,
To be with Him for ever blest.

Verse 1
Before I spoke a word You were singing over me
You have been so so good to me
Before I took a breath You breathed Your life in me
You have been so so kind to me

Chorus
(And) O the overwhelming never-ending reckless
Love of God
O it chases me down fights 'til I'm found
Leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn't earn it I don't deserve it
Still You give Yourself away
O the overwhelming never-ending reckless
Love of God yeah

Verse 2
When I was Your foe still Your love fought for me
You have been so so good to me
When I felt no worth You paid it all for me
You have been so so kind to me

Chorus
O the overwhelming never-ending reckless
Love of God
O it chases me down fights 'til I'm found
Leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn't earn it I don't deserve it
Still You give Yourself away
O the overwhelming never-ending reckless
Love of God yeah

Bridge
There's no shadow You won't light up
Mountain You won't climb up
Coming after me
There's no wall You won't kick down
Lie You won't tear down
Coming after me
(X4)

Chorus
O the overwhelming never-ending reckless
Love of God
O it chases me down fights 'til I'm found
Leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn't earn it I don't deserve it
Still You give Yourself away
O the overwhelming never-ending reckless
Love of God yeah

We Pray for Ourselves and the World

Before you begin: You might like to think about people who are sick or in need, and consider other prayer requests you have. At the end of these prayers, pray for each other, and any particular issues that you face.

Heavenly Father, you are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. We thank you for your daily forgiveness of our sins, and your guidance and love in every struggle we face. Keep us open to learning from your son Jesus by listening to your word. Lord in your mercy:

hear our prayer

We thank you for your church. Bless and protect your church throughout the world so that all people may find their rest in you. Equip all leaders, parents, and grandparents to carry out their callings with joy, strength and wisdom.  Lord in your mercy:

hear our prayer

Guide the leaders of the nations that they speak the truth. We thank you for ordering our country and society by means of our government and elected leaders. Bless those in positions of responsibility.  Lord in your mercy:

hear our prayer

Sustain all workers and business owners who suffer loss of livelihood due to shut-downs, quarantines, closed borders, and other restrictions. Protect and guard all those who must travel. Lord in your mercy:

hear our prayer

Grant your healing and peace to all we know are unwell or undergoing medical treatment. Today we commit to you (insert names). Watch over them, give them confidence in your good and gracious will for them.  Comfort those who are lonely and those who mourn the loss of loved ones. Lord in your mercy:

hear our prayer

Heal our world, heal our bodies, strengthen our hearts and our minds, and in the midst of turmoil, give us hope and peace. Lord in your mercy:

hear our prayer

Almighty and merciful Father, hear us, your children, as we bring our prayers to you. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

Blessing

The blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be with us always.

Amen

HYMN: Rejoice the Lord is King

Public Domain. (LHS  115)
Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Lyrics, music, and vocals at https://youtu.be/dVKfpa0hwBI

1
Rejoice, the Lord is king!
Your Lord and king adore;
Mortals, give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

2
Jesus, the Saviour, reigns,
The God of truth and love;
When He had purged our stains,
He took His seat above:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

3
His kingdom cannot fail,
He rules o’er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell
Are to our Jesus given:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

4
He sits at God’s right hand
Till all His foes submit,
And bow to His command,
And fall before His feet:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

5
Rejoice in glorious hope:
Jesus, the judge, shall come,
And take his servants up
To their eternal home:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

Verse 1
Our rest is in heaven our rest is not here
Then why should we tremble when trials draw near
Be still and remember the worst that can come
But shortens our journey and hastens us home

Chorus 1
Christ our glory Christ our hope
Christ our King forevermore
Be still and remember the worst that can come
But shortens our journey and hastens us home

Verse 2
No hours should be wasted on seeking our joy
And placing our hope in what will be destroyed
We look for a city that hands have not raised
We long for a country that sin has not stained

Chorus 2
Christ our glory Christ our hope
Christ our King forevermore
We look for a city that hands have not raised
We long for a country that sin has not stained

Verse 3
Though trouble and anguish increase all the more
They cannot compare to the glory in store
Come joy or come sorrow whatever befalls
The light of the Savior will outshine them all

Chorus 3
Christ our glory Christ our hope
Christ our King forevermore
Christ our glory Christ our hope
Christ our King forevermore
Christ our glory Christ our hope
Christ our King forevermore
Come joy or come sorrow whatever befalls
The light of the Savior will outshine them all
